THE day and hour of fate! and one year past
Out to the darkness. Wake again, O heart;
Smile and rejoice again, O eyes that smart
Year-long with hot tears shed; be ye the last
To mourn this day with spirit overcast.
This day of days keep ye your thoughts apart
For those men only. Heed not sorrow's dart,
But bend in homage, yea through all the vast
Dear lands they loved, and pray ye in one breath
The whole world over for their memory –
Bright deeds that live to mock the power of death –
All ye, their brothers; and then silently
Swear from your hearts, when ye enough have prayed
That those who live in death be not betrayed.
