NOT with vain tears, O brothers, shall ye keep
This day most memoried of all your days;
But with adoring thoughts and pæans of praise
Greet ye the day and hour, that those who sleep
Silent and lonely – seeing that ye reap
What they have sown in many windy ways
The wide world through – may know the prayers ye raise
Are grown from gratefulness: though eyes may weep
In darkness, let the eyes they see be proud
To greet the day and hold its memory clear
For their dear sakes. And when ye shall have vowed
To them eternal homage, bend an ear
To all those others, broken and unknown,
Standing on life's grim battlefield alone.
